How nutrition can support pregnancy

The role of a Dietitian

A Dietitian can help you meet your changing nutrition needs throughout pregnancy while supporting healthy weight gain, energy levels, and your baby’s growth and development.

Sheeri Jonnala is a Dietitian located in Fairfax VA and can provide personalized guidance on prenatal nutrition, key nutrients, meal planning, managing common pregnancy symptoms, and navigating dietary restrictions or pregnancy-related nutrition concerns.

Healthy growth and development

Good nutrition during pregnancy provides the essential nutrients, protein, and energy needed to support your baby’s healthy growth and development. A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein, healthy fats, and key nutrients such as folate, iron, choline, iodine, and omega-3 fatty acids help support fetal brain, nervous system, and overall development.

Blood sugar regulation

Nutrition plays an important role in managing gestational diabetes by supporting healthy blood sugar levels while ensuring you and your baby receive the nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy.

A Dietitian can help create balanced meals and snacks with the right combination of carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and healthy fats to minimize blood sugar spikes and support appropriate weight gain and fetal growth.

Managing symptoms

Nutrition can help manage common pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, constipation, heartburn, and fatigue while ensuring you continue to meet your nutritional needs.

A Dietitian can provide personalized strategies, meal and snack ideas, and practical adjustments to help you feel better and stay nourished throughout pregnancy.

Postpartum & breastfeeding

Good nutrition after pregnancy supports healing, replenishes nutrient stores, and provides the energy needed for postpartum recovery and caring for a new baby. During breastfeeding, adequate calories, protein, fluids, and key nutrients help support milk production and maternal health while meeting increased nutritional needs.

nutrition for different needs

Gestational Diabetes

Nutrition plays an important role in managing gestational diabetes by helping support healthy blood sugar levels while providing the nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy. A Dietitian can create a personalized plan that balances carbohydrates with protein, fiber, and healthy fats to help minimize blood sugar spikes and support healthy fetal growth.

Anemia

Nutrition can help support the prevention and management of anemia during pregnancy by providing adequate iron, folate, vitamin B12, and other nutrients needed for healthy red blood cell production. A Dietitian can help identify iron-rich foods, improve iron absorption through food combinations, and develop a personalized nutrition plan to support healthy iron levels during pregnancy.

Preeclampsia

Nutrition can support overall maternal health during pregnancy and may help promote healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular health in those at risk for or experiencing preeclampsia. A Dietitian can help ensure adequate intake of protein, calcium, potassium, fiber, and other essential nutrients while developing a balanced eating pattern tailored to individual needs and medical recommendations.

Multiples

Pregnancy with twins or multiples increases nutritional needs, making adequate protein, calories, vitamins, and minerals especially important for supporting maternal health and fetal growth. A Dietitian can provide personalized guidance on meeting increased nutrient needs, managing healthy weight gain, and developing practical meals and snacks to support a healthy multiple pregnancy.
